Attacks on inverters are a concern: “Please keep your inverter online so that we can perform a remote diagnosis.”
This or a similar message is clearly stated in the operating instructions for most Far Eastern, particularly Chinese, hardware. This gives state-controlled hackers access to entire solar or other renewable energy generation systems. It is an issue that politicians and legislators must urgently address.
In mid-May, Mirko Ross was interviewed by Marcel Roth for MDR Sachsen-Anhalt about the critical vulnerability of secret backdoors in solar inverter systems. The interview covered how these backdoors can be exploited by attackers to cause blackouts in the German power grid.
