Deepfakes are no longer a thing of the future – they’re reality.
AI-generated videos in which politicians appear to say things they never actually said are spreading rapidly. Often, these are created by editing Bundestag speeches or using highly realistic lip-syncing.
The danger: Technically, these manipulations are now almost indistinguishable from real footage. They’re deliberately used to undermine trust – often just before elections, and frequently with origins that are hard to trace. Today, almost anyone can create a deepfake with simple tools. This makes it all the more important to respond, report content, and raise awareness.
On the positive side: States like Baden-Württemberg are taking concrete action with specific plans to protect themselves against deepfake campaigns.
