ReSiLENT: Research project delivers solutions to protect EV charging infrastructure from cyberattacks

Securing the future of electric mobility

ReSiLENT research project concludes successfully, delivering solutions to identify cyber risks and strengthen the resilience of EV charging infrastructure

Regensburg / Stuttgart / Leinfelden-Echterdingen, October 2026 – Electric mobility depends on charging infrastructure people can trust. To help build that trust, OTH Regensburg, asvin GmbH and chargeIQ GmbH have developed solutions designed to better protect charging infrastructure against cyberattacks and support reliable operation. Their joint research project, ReSiLENT – short for “Resilient and Secure Charging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles” – has now concluded, delivering a wide range of practical results.

As electric vehicles, charging stations, backend systems and energy grids become more interconnected, cybersecurity demands continue to grow.
ReSiLENT explored and tested ways to identify security risks early, make relevant information securely available and support appropriate action.
Its goal: to make charging infrastructure more robust and resilient against digital threats throughout its lifecycle.

The project took an integrated approach, combining prevention, detection and response with traceable documentation of security incidents. The solutions were connected to existing charging infrastructure components and put to the test in a joint field trial under realistic operating conditions.

Proven in the field

The consortium began by analysing potential threats to connected charging infrastructure and translating its findings into a shared set of requirements for a modern security framework. These requirements formed the basis for applications that detect suspicious activity, support appropriate responses and provide the stakeholders involved with security-relevant information.

A key outcome is a decentralised communication architecture for exchanging security information.
It is designed to enable reliable, scalable processing of charging-point and operator information across distributed systems. The team also developed a central user interface that gives operators, owners and security teams access to relevant alerts and guidance tailored to their respective roles.

The system’s components were integrated into specially prepared prototype charging stations and operated in an environment closely reflecting real-world use. The trials demonstrated that the approach could be integrated successfully at both a technical and an operational level. The results provide a foundation for further testing, development and potential applications in charging infrastructure and other connected IoT environments.

For asvin CEO Mirko Ross, the ReSiLENT results come at precisely the right time, as innovative mobility concepts gain wider acceptance:

“Charging infrastructure is a vital part of the backbone of electric mobility. Beyond the energy-management data exchanged between vehicles, power generation and storage systems, these networks will increasingly carry all the data needed to operate new mobility solutions. That dramatically expands the cyberattack surface. The results of ReSiLENT enable us to make mobility infrastructure of every kind cybersecure and ready for innovation.”

The findings lay the groundwork for further research and development, particularly additional testing of charging infrastructure in collaboration with manufacturers and operators. Key priorities include refining the security functions and feeding the project’s insights into standardisation and open-source initiatives.

The consortium will use the results to advance the security of connected charging infrastructure and make its findings available for future applications in electric mobility and other critical IoT systems.
