Train Radio Outage Exposes Weaknesses in Critical Infrastructure

The recent disruption in Deutsche Bahn’s train radio system brought rail traffic across Germany to a standstill – apparently triggered by the replacement of a “technical component.” While the railway operator considers the safe stopping of trains a success of its emergency management, experts see clear room for improvement.

Security expert Mirko Ross emphasized in an interview with SWR Aktuell that the time required to restore operations is particularly critical:

it took over 90 minutes before a stable backup system was available. For critical infrastructures such as rail transport, this is too long – emergency processes must function faster and more robustly.

The incident raises key questions about the resilience of complex technical systems and the practical implementation of emergency response plans.
