AfD Leak: Mirko Ross Assesses the Data Breach for RaiNews.it
How large is the AfD data leak, where does the data come from and who is behind it? Italian broadcaster Rai put these questions to asvin CEO Mirko Ross. The interview focused on the origin and authenticity of the data, possible sources and the contents of the leak.
According to Mirko Ross, the dataset comprises around 400,000 emails as well as some 50,000 documents and database records. Alongside the email correspondence, it includes membership and donor lists, among other material.
The most likely source is the IT systems of the AfD’s North Rhine-Westphalia state branch. So far, there is no independent information on the possible perpetrators or the status of the investigation.
Hacktivists or Insiders
Hacktivism, meaning politically motivated attackers, is the obvious explanation. However, Ross cautions against settling on it. It must also be considered that the leak was carried out with help from insiders, or by people from within the AfD’s own circles.
