Mirko Ross on tagesschau.de about the hacker attack on Binance
Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, has reported a security incident with estimated losses of 6.3 billion dollars. In an interview with Michelle Goddemeier of ARD’s finance desk, asvin CEO Mirko Ross puts the attack into context. Part of the stolen crypto has been frozen. “Three billion are most likely gone for good,” says Ross.
Attackers had access to the key system
According to current information, the attackers had access to Binance’s key system, so they could approve transactions themselves. One possible way in was an IT employee’s compromised laptop. Mirko Ross finds it worrying that the activity went unnoticed for several hours. The attackers first made test transactions and only then moved large sums. The trail leads to North Korea: recipient addresses from earlier attacks attributed to North Korea also appear in the current case.
He advises investors to spread their assets. Crypto they don’t actively trade should go into a cold wallet with no internet connection.
