Alongside reporters from the Stuttgarter Zeitung and Stuttgarter Nachrichten newspapers, asvin and OTH Regensburg investigated and documented the security vulnerabilities of various inverter models.
These vulnerabilities open the door to cybercriminals, enabling them to develop strategies for attacking power grids.
The issue is not individual devices, but rather the sheer number and concentration of devices affected by a coordinated attack. Once a critical mass of devices is reached, an attacker exploiting a vulnerability in a particular inverter model could cause serious problems with power output.
Such an attack could have significant consequences for grid stability and potentially lead to power outages.
