In mid-July, mawi-on, the magazine of the Stuttgart Chamber of Commerce, published an interview with our CEO Mirko Ross.
Editor-in-chief Walter Beck wanted to know what it means for European business that the most capable AI models from the US will in future be fully available only to American companies.
The answer is uncomfortable. This isn’t large corporations versus mid-sized firms – it affects everyone.
Anyone who can’t use the new generation of models loses productivity, in development just as much as in defending against attacks. Because the very models Washington classifies as dual-use goods are the ones we urgently need for defence. Europe spent years debating how to regulate AI and simply assumed it would remain available. Now it is Europe being regulated.
That said, the situation is not hopeless. China initially looked hopelessly behind and is today only weeks behind the US developers.
Mirko Ross is therefore calling for a “Manhattan Project”: Siemens, Airbus and others each investing hundreds of millions, together with the EU, with the goal of building a competitive European model within 18 months. Mistral could be one starting point. There are strong young companies such as Black Forest Labs, there is IPAI in Heilbronn and the supercomputing centre in Stuttgart.
What’s missing is computing power at scale, a pooling of forces instead of many small initiatives and managers with the courage to invest now!
