Mirko Ross on Deutsche Welle’s Podcast “The Dip”: The Risks of Technological Dependence

In the latest episode of “The Dip” by Deutsche Welle, Mirko Ross, CEO of asvin, joins China expert Claire Chu (Atlantic Council) to discuss one of the most pressing questions of our time:

What risks arise when core technologies – from power grids to household devices – are developed and controlled outside of Europe?

One particularly critical point of the discussion: so-called “kill pills.” This refers to the theoretical capability to remotely disable systems entirely – for instance, by simultaneously triggering critical commands to solar inverters or wind turbines. The result could be a large-scale blackout.

“Can someone send a ‘kill pill’ to a power grid and cause a blackout? Theoretically, yes.”

These scenarios make it clear that what is at stake is no longer just IT security, but digital sovereignty and the stability of our entire economy.

The podcast makes one thing undeniably clear: Resilience is not an abstract concept – it is a fundamental necessity for Europe’s energy and technology landscape.
